Chelsea supporters were lamenting their fate as Real Madrid ran amok on the Premier League team as Chilwell was sent off as they blasted Cucurella as the "worst transfer in Premier League history."

At the Santiago Bernabeu, where the Blues were playing Los Blancos, Marc Cucurella was criticized for his dreadful performance and shoddy defence.

Ben Chilwell received a straight red in the meantime, making it a forgettable evening for Frank Lampard's team.

Todd Boehly, a co-owner, expected a 3-0 victory before the game, but what actually happened was another dismal performance by the west London team.

It got to the point where even their supporters began to yell at some of the players, Chilwell and Cucurella in particular.

Chelsea acquired Cucurella from Brighton last summer, but so far, the transaction has fallen short of expectations.

Before the Blues stepped in and snatched up the defender, the Spaniard came dangerously close to joining Manchester City.

The player is only one of several fresh faces Chelsea has added under the new Boehly administration.

The situation was better before the game. "I believe that action is the only way to become a leader," remarked Lampard. Being referred to as a leader is meaningless unless you actually lead on the field. We can't claim to be entirely youthful because we have many players with numerous titles. Tomorrow's game is a terrific opportunity to perform and display personality.

"The character gets questioned as is typical in a season when a club like us performs below the levels we desire. The players' only option is to demonstrate it on the field. It is viewable where people can see it. You may talk all you want, but the players need to demonstrate it on the field.

I'm not in the least doubting their strong sense of character because I've been in the locker room and am familiar with football. There is personality. Nobody desires to lose football games. However, athletes' confidence can be affected from time to time, and a loss of confidence can sometimes be mistaken for a lack of character.
