Unfortunately, Gusto worriedly injured his hamstring in only his second game back at Lyon, and Chelsea announced in mid-February that he would finish his recovery at Cobham. The ensuing lack of updates on his rehabilitation was reported to have enraged Lyon and manager Laurent Blanc, according to Leprogres.
In April, the 19-year-old was added back to Lyon's matchday squad for their Ligue 1 match against Marseille. Gusto was a hot topic of conversation prior to the game, with Blanc publicly voicing his displeasure with how the previous few months had transpired.
Blanc stated during a news conference that "Malo Gusto is a subject in itself." He is physically capable of playing, but he hasn't had much time to do it. I didn't like how [his departure for Chelsea] took so long. Forget about the incident; he is present, and there are still seven games to play.
"I advised him to make the most of his available playing time. He must be content to train with his friends, and he will be okay for Sunday.
After receiving a 10-minute cameo against Marseille, the French team appeared ready to ease Gusto back into action. Despite his brief presence, Gusto was involved in a crucial moment that decided the game, but it took place at the opposite end of the field.
With the score tied at 1, Marseille charged forward to attack, and defender Sinaly Diomande's clearance hit Gusto before slowly rolling into the goal. Prior to its match against Strasbourg on Friday of next week, the result places Lyon eighth in the standings.
Before reporting for Chelsea's preseason in the summer, Gusto will want to play more games for Lyon.
