Under Potter, Chelsea, who had been expected to challenge for the Premier League title after spending a significant amount of money on new players since last June, had dropped into the bottom half of the table and dropped well out of the race to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
The Blues have held “initial talks” with Pochettino and say that he is one of five candidates – thought to include ex-Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann but not former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique – the club are looking at to fill the position.
Pochettino has experience in the Premier League, having managed Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur before arriving at PSG, where he spent a season and a half leading the French giants.
If Chelsea is spending large sums to win trophies, that’s something that the Argentine manager lacks and has been a criticism of his, so it will be interesting to see if he has better luck at Chelsea than he did at PSG.
