Shock as Burnley manager Vincent Kompany makes Chelsea job final list
One of the last three candidates for the Chelsea managerial vacancy is thought to be Vincent Kompany, the manager of Burnley.

After negotiations with former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann broke down, the Manchester City playing great is a surprise candidate with former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino to lead Burnley to promotion from the Championship.

The club's pursuit of other managers had left the German coach unimpressed, and he preferred a more direct appointment.

It is understood that the club's investigation of the 35-year-old produced "mixed to negative" results, raising doubts about his suitability as Graham Potter's long-term replacement.

Despite being one of the initial names to be associated with the position after Potter was fired, he had not been the hierarchy's top choice during the search, and the parties' discussions have now officially come to a conclusion.

The two remaining managers up for selection are Kompany and Pochettino, with Kompany having surprised observers on Friday.

The 37-year-old Belgian, who excelled as Manchester City's captain in the Premier League, is just as qualified to win the job as the new favorite Pochettino, according to the Stamford Bridge club.

This week, the Argentinean Pochettino met with Chelsea in west London.

There may be one more name on the list, but it won't be Brighton's Roberto De Zerbi, Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim, or ex-Spain and Barcelona manager Luis Enrique. He is a person who is "liked and respected," but whose name hasn't been connected to the position in the media.

After selecting a few prospects from a pool of about seven, Chelsea is starting a new round of negotiations.

After losing to Real Madrid 4-0 over the course of two legs to leave the Champions League, the team is still led by interim manager Frank Lampard until the completion of the current campaign.

With little to play for in their remaining seven games, the Blues are now ranked 11th in the Premier League.

After a turbulent season, the new manager confronts a significant hurdle in trying to re-engage the players without access to European competition.

Chelsea will attempt to drastically reduce the size of their roster after it grew to more than 32 players this season.

Before players know if they have a position in the squad or must negotiate moves away, the new manager's advice will be crucial.
