In exchange for Rafael Leao's summer transfer to Stamford Bridge, Chelsea has agreed to settle his €20 million fine.

According to A Bola, Sporting president Frederico Varandas and club directors spoke with Chelsea on Tuesday to discuss Leao.

In that discussion, Chelsea agreed to pay Sporting the over €20 million owed if they signed Leao this summer.

Contract issues with Rafa Leao
The compensation that Leao owes to his former team Sporting Lisbon is represented by this sum of money.

After losing a lawsuit alleging contract breach, the forward was compelled to pay Sporting €19.5 million.

After fans invaded the team's practise facility in 2018, Leao left Sporting as a free agent, alleging it endangered his safety as a worker.

Leao, however, lost his legal battle, and he now demands that the team with which he inks a new deal pay this compensation.

Leao's San Siro contract expires in 2024, and the issue with the money he owes Sporting has been a major factor in why he hasn't signed a renewal.

Milan will sell him this summer if the deal is not renewed in order to keep him from leaving on a free transfer the following season.

If he does decide to go, Chelsea is seen to be the frontrunner to sign him, and the A Bola article just serves to confirm this.

Leao may be getting closer to signing a contract renewal with Milan, according to certain Italian media, but other sources have suggested that Lille may be ordered by the courts to pay the punishment rather than Leao.

Leao himself has had a hit-and-miss season with Milan, but he has been on fire lately, helping the Rossoneri defeat Napoli and advance to the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
