£2.5 billion from the Chelsea sale is still frozen Bank account for Roman Abramovich
One of the strangest business dealings in sports history occurred when Chelsea was sold a year ago. A large club was purchased from a sanctioned billionaire who was owed a huge sum by the club he was selling but was not permitted to profit financially from the transaction.
When all was said and done, Todd Boehly's Clearlake Capital was able to seize control, but what happened to the £2.5 billion he spent?
According to The Times, the money is in the bank account of Fordstam Ltd., the front business Abramovich set up to administer Chelsea. Due to his inability to access it and the government's inability to simply seize it the infinity.
What will happen with it after then is unclear. Does it only wait until the sanctions are lifted and the Russian invasion of Ukraine is over? There could be more twists in the story to come.
